Spring Break 2014- MOAB!! Day 1

We set off "to sail" on Sunday afternoon. We were about an hour into our drive when Derek noticed our trailer tire looked very, very bald.
Thomas was trying to help Daddy get the tire off but they found out they didn't have the right tool to get the lug nuts off.
We then drove around to find a tire store that would have the right part for Derek to take the bad tire off.
He found the part and proceeded to get the bad tire off and spare tire on.
Two hours later, we were back on the road again. :)

 Patient boy!
Once we arrived to Arches National Park, the kids kept spooking themselves out seeing "Dinosaur eyes" when the reflectors shined at our truck.

Our first morning in Arches!
We went on an awesome hike that was right by our camp. We were able to hike to three different arches.
Did you know there are 2,000 arches at this park?

Joseph got in on some of the hiking/walking action. He did get nervous walking through narrow fins.

He kind of got stuck. :)
Here was the second arch we made it to.
We could actually walk right into it.
It was fun to be the only ones there and to hear our echoes.
 Snack time.

This was cute. There were Cairns all over the trails to let you know you're on the right path to your destination. Hmm..we figured this is a GREAT object lesson to what the Holy Ghost can do for us in our lives. We also compared it to holding to the Iron Rod.
Here are Thomas and Emma building a cairn on our hike. They built a few of them along the way.
Here is the "Broken Arch". In the 40's a big chunk (of left side) broke off the arch.
The big bolders remain scattered at bottom of arch. This was Thomas' favorite arch.
I think it became more exciting to him to imagine the sounds of the arch breaking and hitting the ground below.
Look at them pose.
I'm holding Joseph in the shade while he sleeps.

The kids were always bringing me all sorts of flowers.

After hiking to three arches, we head back to trailer for some quiet time. Daddy and older kids played "Uno".
Emma had been begging all day to take her up to this tall rock right by our camp site.
So Daddy took Emma and Thomas one at a time.

 Joseph watching them.
 Thomas' turn.
The two older kids got Junior Ranger work books. They had to describe certain observations of different things around the park like rocks, plants, formations, arches, animals, etc....
Here they found some animal hoof/foot prints. They had to guess what animal they think it was.
Here they are finishing some last observations at the end of the day in their books.
Derek took some awesome photos of the night skies. Aren't those colors of rock amazing.
Emma kept saying, "I just love being in nature and seeing all the creations."
